Prisoner of war camp
Camp for captured soldiers or officers of enemy forces. During World War II, about 1,000 prisoner of war camps were operated by the German Armed Forces. They were mostly located on German Armed Forces territory, often on the edge of military training areas. Within the camps, prisoners were often housed separately by nationality. In addition to the assembly and transit camps just behind the front, there were hundreds of Oflags (officers’ camps) and Stalags (main camps for non-commissioned officers and soldiers), as well as numerous smaller work detachments at industrial plants, construction companies, and in agriculture and forestry. The prisoners of war deployed in Munich generally came from Stalag VII A in Moosburg, where a total of over 150,000 prisoners of war were registered.
